{"id":10043,"date":"2025-06-06T07:43:42","date_gmt":"2025-06-06T07:43:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.advantagego.com\/en-us\/?p=10043"},"modified":"2025-06-06T07:43:46","modified_gmt":"2025-06-06T07:43:46","slug":"voi-podcast-with-steve-arora-a-reinsurance-leader","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.advantagego.com\/en-us\/content\/voi-podcast-with-steve-arora-a-reinsurance-leader\/","title":{"rendered":"Arora: You need to have sizzle"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><iframe title=\"Ep256 Steve Arora: You need to have sizzle\" allowtransparency=\"true\" height=\"150\" width=\"100%\" style=\"border: none; min-width: min(100%, 430px);height:150px;\" scrolling=\"no\" data-name=\"pb-iframe-player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.podbean.com\/player-v2\/?from=embed&amp;i=tw89d-18c6830-pb&amp;share=1&amp;download=1&amp;fonts=Tahoma&amp;skin=3267a3&amp;font-color=auto&amp;rtl=0&amp;logo_link=episode_page&amp;btn-skin=1b1b1b&amp;size=150\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ex Axis CEO Steve Arora appeared on the latest Voice of Insurance episode, produced in association with AdvantageGo.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Until recently, Steve Arora was on the cusp of launching Alpine Re, a new balance sheet reinsurer aimed at capitalising on a disrupted global reinsurance market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the venture ultimately didn\u2019t secure the $1bn in capital it sought, the experience has left Arora with a deeper understanding of what investors are really looking for \u2014 and what it takes to build a reinsurer from scratch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking to the <em>Voice of Insurance<\/em> podcast, Arora reflected on the 20-month capital-raising journey that followed the 2023 reinsurance reset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe took a swing,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was tough macro conditions overall, and we just couldn\u2019t drag the deal over the finish line. But it was tremendous learning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Understanding investor appetite<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arora co-founded Alpine Re with industry veteran Willie Zeller, targeting a Bermuda-based A- rated vehicle with a focused and selective underwriting strategy. Yet despite promising fundamentals, Arora encountered strong headwinds in the capital markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat we were told when we started was PE is closed, and what I can confirm to you is that PE was closed,\u201d he said. \u201cThe bar just gets raised very, very high for any new allocations. It\u2019s very difficult to raise an anchor investment of $250m to $500m from a brand-name PE firm in this type of environment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Private equity\u2019s reluctance stemmed from illiquidity, high interest rates and uncertain exit routes, leading to a preference for capital-light businesses and annuity platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPsychology trumps substance,\u201d one investor advised him. \u201cIn such a competitive fundraising environment, you need to have sizzle \u2014 something forward-looking and a feeling of scarcity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arora admitted Alpine Re could have leaned more into that. \u201cBeing self-critical, I think we could have over-rotated and sold a little bit more,\u201d he said. \u201cWe could have added more sizzle to our business plan, that would have given the impression we had the world\u2019s best algorithm or were the first and only to implement AI.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While family offices and pension funds showed limited engagement, the strongest interest came from asset managers and sovereign wealth funds, particularly those pursuing insurance as part of an asset gathering strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Building the ideal reinsurer<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alpine Re was structured around some clear fundamentals: a modern platform with centralised operations, minimal legacy drag, outsourced infrastructure and a product-centric, return-oriented philosophy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe set out with a nuts-and-bolts plan, very focused on the fundamentals,\u201d Arora said. \u201cEverything we did was rooted in consistent book value growth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He remains convinced that even in a market past its peak, opportunities exist for new entrants \u2014 especially those with clean balance sheets and modern operating models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s limited competition in P&amp;C reinsurance,\u201d he said. \u201cEven with a low-90s combined ratio, the investment side of the equation can get you to a 20-plus percent ROE.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arora also stressed that AI and modern tech platforms offer clear benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFrom day one you can automate submissions, triage transactions, evaluate deals faster, reduce bias. It makes operations leaner and more consistent \u2014 and all of it can be cloud-based,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What next?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The experience has shifted Arora\u2019s outlook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOnce you enter the space of trying to do something entrepreneurial, you get a little bit rebooted,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He sees opportunity in diversification \u2014 notably bridging P&amp;C with life and health\u2014as well as in value creation models that are smaller, focused and tech-enabled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While he explored the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advantagego.com\/en-us\/content\/new-podcast-with-mike-van-der-straaten-ceo-of-antares\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.advantagego.com\/en-us\/content\/new-podcast-with-mike-van-der-straaten-ceo-of-antares\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MGA model<\/a> during Alpine\u2019s buildout, he remains sceptical of its long-term sustainability in reinsurance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just unnatural to add another link in the value chain \u2013 too much cost,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for the future, Arora is open\u2014but committed to doing something entrepreneurial again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have no regrets on pursuing the opportunity,\u201d he said, adding: \u201cAligning yourself with the right people who you can trust and lean on makes a big, big difference.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ex Axis CEO Steve Arora appeared on the latest Voice of Insurance episode, produced in association with AdvantageGo.
