{"id":10001,"date":"2025-05-09T09:17:03","date_gmt":"2025-05-09T09:17:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.advantagego.com\/en-us\/?p=10001"},"modified":"2025-05-09T09:20:16","modified_gmt":"2025-05-09T09:20:16","slug":"voi-podcast-with-senior-executives-from-dellwood-insurance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.advantagego.com\/en-us\/content\/voi-podcast-with-senior-executives-from-dellwood-insurance\/","title":{"rendered":"Dellwood\u2019s New Blueprint: Building Insurance for the Future"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><iframe title=\"Ep252 Michael Price &amp; Kean Driscoll, Dellwood: One plus one is three\" allowtransparency=\"true\" height=\"150\" width=\"100%\" style=\"border: none; min-width: min(100%, 430px);height:150px;\" scrolling=\"no\" data-name=\"pb-iframe-player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.podbean.com\/player-v2\/?from=embed&amp;i=rm66d-189d68a-pb&amp;share=1&amp;download=1&amp;fonts=Tahoma&amp;skin=3267a3&amp;font-color=&amp;rtl=0&amp;logo_link=&amp;btn-skin=1b1b1b&amp;size=150\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Two highly experienced executives joined host Mark Geoghegan on the latest episode of The Voice of Insurance podcast, produced in association with AdvantageGo.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dellwood Insurance Group is aiming to redefine underwriting discipline at a time of rapid change in the property and casualty space, when many firms are balancing the competing desires for growth and pricing discipline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Kean Driscoll, President and Chief Underwriting Officer, \u201cThe market opportunity is profound, but we want to do it in a really judicious and measured way.\u201d For Dellwood, that means a deliberate approach to managing concentration risk, particularly in the wake of climate-driven events such as California\u2019s wildfires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Concentration risk<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Driscoll pointed to urban conflagration and location-specific perils as central challenges. \u201cThere\u2019s going to be continued pressure and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advantagego.com\/en-us\/products\/exposure\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.advantagego.com\/en-us\/products\/exposure\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">emphasis on managing risk<\/a> and pricing in a changing landscape,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dellwood\u2019s CEO Michael Price added that Dellwood\u2019s clean-slate model makes it easier to manage accumulation: \u201cWe\u2019ve got no insurance legacy and no tech legacy,\u201d he said. \u201cOur reinsurers can look right through our underwriting systems and see exactly what aggregations are on our books.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team is focused on maintaining this level of transparency as they scale. As Driscoll put it, \u201cThey\u2019re a critical part of our capital structure, and we\u2019ve been really pleased with the partnerships we\u2019ve been able to develop in just a short period of time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>AI as a tool, not a substitute<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dellwood is starting to embed artificial intelligence (AI) and structured data across its operations. From the outset, the firm has emphasised control of the user experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe own the code. We\u2019ve built it ourselves,\u201d Price said. \u201cCycle times for quoting small property business are now under 30 minutes,\u201d said Price. \u201cThat used to take days.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Driscoll sees this not as a threat to underwriting talent, but a way to empower it. \u201cWe view technology as an enabler of relationships, not disintermediation,\u201d he said. \u201cIt allows our underwriters to actually underwrite,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The benefits are already showing in productivity and hit rates. \u201cThe more efficiently we can manage queues, the higher our buying ratios,\u201d Driscoll added. \u201cAnd it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advantagego.com\/en-us\/products\/underwriting\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.advantagego.com\/en-us\/products\/underwriting\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gives underwriters more time to think critically<\/a> and identify where they want to deploy risk capital.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI is also being applied to ingestion and triage, with data being scrubbed, modelled and prioritised as soon as it arrives, Price explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat work happens instantaneously. Now underwriters can attack the best business more effectively,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Plans for the future<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dellwood is currently focused on the US market, with a big emphasis on small and medium-sized businesses. \u201cWe\u2019re trying to build a great franchise,\u201d said Price. \u201cThe value proposition is most pronounced in tailoring coverage for smaller businesses, enabled by great technology.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Contract binding is a core pillar, supported by in-house brokerage teams and select MGA partnerships. \u201cWe\u2019re very interested in the MGA space, but only if there\u2019s a unique underwriting or distribution advantage,\u201d Driscoll said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the focus is currently domestic to the American market, there are longer-term ambitions to expand access to capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe think of ourselves as another form of distribution,\u201d said Price. \u201cWe\u2019d like to access the London market to bring more thoughtful capacity on a syndicated basis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both leaders stressed the point that Dellwood is being built to last. \u201cWe\u2019re here for the long run,\u201d said Driscoll. \u201cWe want to build something terrific that services the needs of our capital partners, customers, and distribution partners.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Culture is another foundational priority for the two leaders. \u201cCheck your ego at the door. Two eyes are better than one. Collaboration is key,\u201d said Price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With 60 hires and licensing in all 50 states already secured, Dellwood is now focused on execution, Price emphasised. \u201cWe\u2019re pouring the foundation,\u201d he said. \u201cThe framing is up.
